Drug quiz after student found dead at Leeds Met University

Adam Dixon, a first year Leeds Metropolitan University student from Halifax, was discovered at Beckett Park halls of residence yesterday morning.

Police said they were not treating his death as suspicious.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “At 5.45am on Sunday, police received a report from the ambulance service of the sudden death of an 18-year-old male student at halls of residence at Beckett Park in Leeds.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious. A post-mortem examination took place yesterday and the results of toxicology tests are awaited.

“A 22-year-old man from Headingley has been arrested on suspicion of supplying controlled drugs and is currently in custody.”

The spokesman said Mr Dixon had been formally identified and an inquest into his death was due to open later this week.

Leeds Metropolitan University paid tribute to Mr Dixon, describing him as a “very popular” multimedia technology student.

In a statement, the university said: “In the early hours of the morning on Sunday 8 January, Leeds Metropolitan University first year student Adam Dixon sadly passed away.

“His family have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this very difficult time.

“Adam, who was studying a multimedia technology course, was a very popular student and will be greatly missed.

“We are offering support to students who have been affected by Adam’s death and we are working with the police and the coroner’s office whilst they conduct their investigations.”
