Drunken law student accused of injuring policewoman on Carnage pub crawl

A DRUNK law student assaulted a female police officer, leaving her with a dislocated knee, a broken tooth and a black eye, during a Carnage UK pub crawl in Sheffield, a court heard.

Jamie McGregor, a student at Sheffield University, is accused of causing actual bodily harm while celebrating his 20th birthday on Sunday, February 21 this year.

Sheffield Crown Court was told the incident came just four months after Sheffield Hallam University student Philip Laing urinated on the Barker's Pool war memorial during another Carnage UK event in the city.

Prosecutor Paul Reid said McGregor was taking part in the Carnage UK pub crawl when he got into trouble while dressed in an orange jumpsuit and queuing outside Players Bar in West Street.

Mr Reid said: "The theme was cops and robbers – which is ironic because this young man ended up being arrested."

The trouble started when McGregor tried to jump the queue, Mr Reid told the jury. When he refused to co-operate police officers moved in but McGregor then became violent.

"A scuffle broke out and the defendant lashed out with his fists," Mr Reid said. "He was throwing punches and had lost control of himself."

Sgt Katherine Wallis – who had already dealt with several incidents that night and had arrested another drunken student – received a black eye and dislocated kneecap in the fight.

Defence barrister Dermot Hughes accused her of being "heavy handed." Sgt Wallis said: "I stand by what I did and I would do it again."

Carnage UK organiser Edward Hartley told the court 2,000 students had been on the pub crawl. Mr Hughes, cross-examining Mr Hartley, said: "Your organisation has acquired something of a reputation in this city, has it not?

"One of the participants urinated on the cenotaph in Sheffield. As a result your organisation came under some scrutiny in 2009. Were you determined it wasn't going to be the same in 2010?"

Mr Hartley replied: "I would never say never."

McGregor, whose home address was given as Leyfield Avenue, Stockport, denies one count of causing actual bodily harm.

The trial continues.
