East Coast residents are put on flood alert

Severe weather has battered large parts of Yorkshire and the North as flood warnings were issued and snow fell on high ground.

Motorists attempting to cross over the A57 Snake Pass between Glossop and Sheffield were confronted with hazardous driving conditions as snow covered the highest section of the route, which passes between Bleaklow and Kinder Scout in the Peak District.

There was further snowfall on the tops of the Pennines and flood warnings were issued on the East Coast, with Scarborough, Whitby, Filey, Bridlington and Staithes all at risk as well as towns further up the North East coast.

Billy Payne, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, said: "There has been some hill snow today, mostly in the Highlands and the Pennines. It has been a few centimetres over high ground, with nothing at lower levels."

In the rest of the UK, heavy snow fell in parts of Scotland. The A93 Glenshee to Braemar road in the Grampian area was closed due to drifting snow and high winds and a weather warning was issued for the South East, where showers and thunderstorms are expected from the English Channel.

The Environment Agency also issued flood warnings for parts of Wales and the Midlands.

Today is expected to be wet and overcast for most of the country, with a strong north-easterly wind expected.
