E.coli outbreak hits consumer confidence

Almost four out of ten people in the UK have been worried about the safety of fruit and vegetables following the E.coli outbreak centred on Germany, according to a survey published yesterday.

Despite experts saying there is no evidence food on sale in the UK has been affected, 38 per cent of people questioned by Harris Interactive for The Grocer said they were worried about falling ill from eating fruit and veg bought in the UK.

Of these, 10 per cent said they were “very worried”.

The research, based on interviews with more than 1,300 people, showed 45 per cent had changed they way they prepared food at home in the wake of the health crisis.

It showed 17 per cent had started washing fruit and veg for the first time and 28 per cent were washing produce more thoroughly than in the past.
