Editor relishes challenge at helm of sister papers

THE Editor of the Yorkshire Post, Peter Charlton, has taken up a new role that will see him overseeing this newspaper as well as its sister title, the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Mr Charlton, pictured, has been appointed Editorial Director of Yorkshire Post Newspapers. The Editor of the Yorkshire Evening Post, Paul Napier, is taking up a new role as Group Editorial Development Director within Johnston Press, the company that owns both titles.

Mr Charlton has been Editor of the Yorkshire Post for eight years, introducing a series of developments in the paper and website, including a revamped Saturday Magazine, the Excellence in Business Awards, which recognise leading companies, and the Environment Awards, which recognise innovation. Previously, he edited The Star, Sheffield, and the Evening Gazette, Blackpool.

He said of his new appointment: “I am looking forward to helping to shape this business in the future: Editing the Yorkshire Post alone is a great privilege and the opportunity to extend my role will enable me to better target our journalism at both our two key titles and online.

“The regional press faces a challenging future. We must maintain both our momentum and standards in order to meet those changing needs.

“To my mind, the Yorkshire Post is regional journalism’s leading title and, in the Evening Post, we have a paper and website that should reflect and campaign for the people of Leeds.”

Mr Charlton serves on the Board of the Society of Editors, which ensures high standards across British journalism.

Last night at the Newspaper Industry Awards, the relaunched Saturday edition of the Yorkshire Post was named Weekend Newspaper of the Year.
