Eight set to receive honorary degrees

HONORARY degrees are to be awarded by Sheffield University to eight people this week, including legal chief executive Sir Nigel Knowles and TV producer Roger Wilson.

Mr Wilson, who will become an honorary Doctor of Medicine, is a television producer who founded the charity Sarcoma UK, to provide advice for patients with rare cancers.

Sir Nigel, a law graduate from Sheffield, is joint chief executive of DLA Piper, the world’s largest legal practice with 8,000 staff in 30 countries.

Other honorary degrees will go to cancer researcher Tomas Lindahl, microbiologist Tolu Odugbemi, oceanographer Anthony Hill, soprano singer Josephine Barstow, ambassador David Warren and information scientist Micheline Beaulieu.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Stone is also set to be admitted to the university’s Roll of Benefactors this week.

Originally from Sheffield, Mr Stone has had a successful career as a lawyer specialising in the literary property world. He has also been closely involved with many charities, including the British Red Cross.
