Eight-vehicle pile-up shuts A1

A NUMBER of people have been taken to hospital after a crash involving eight vehicles on the A1 in North Yorkshire.

The pile-up happened on the southbound carriageway near Dishforth at around 6.30pm on Tuesday.

North Yorkshire Police said a number of people were taken to hospital for treatment, but no-one had suffered life-threatening injuries.

Debris strewn across the three lanes meant police had to close the A1 for several hours while it was cleared.

Chief Inspector Mark Khan said it had not yet been established why the accident happened but it was not due to stormy weather.

“The road conditions were dry at the time,” he said.

He said the injured were taken to hospital in Harrogate or to Leeds General Infirmary.
