Emergency landing at Leeds Bradford Airport

The Jet2 flight from Newcastle to Prague was diverted as a “precautionary measure” due to an operational issue, a spokesman for the airline said.

The aircraft, which had 141 passengers on board, landed safely at around 11.25am.

A spokeswoman for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said it was called after reports that a large aircraft was circling the area “due to engine problems.”

She said there were reports of smoke in the cabin “believed to be caused by overheating brakes.”

The Fire Service sent 11 engines, including specialist vehicles and eight senior staff.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman confirmed that the force was also in attendance, and that the flight landed at 11.25am.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service’s hazardous area response team, along with six ambulances and a doctor, attended, but none of the passengers or aircraft staff required treatment.

A spokesperson for Jet2 said: “Today’s flight LS509 from Newcastle to Prague diverted to Leeds Bradford Airport this morning as a precautionary measure due to an operational issue. The aircraft has landed safely and customers will be transferred to an alternative aircraft so they can continue their journey to Prague as soon as possible.

“We apologise to our customers for the delay to the start of their holiday but their safety is of paramount importance to us.”

A spokesman for Leeds Bradford Airport said: “The aircraft has landed safely and the passengers will now be continuing their journey on an alternative aircraft.”
