A huge accident involving England's Mike Conway ripped his car topieces at America's premier racing event, the Indianapolis 500.

The Dreyer and Reinbold driver launched over the back wheel of Ryan Hunter-Reay before flying into the spectator fencing and crashing back down to the track. Amazingly, he survived, although seriously injured, and was was airlifted to hospital with a badly broken leg.

It meant that Scotsman Dario Franchitti claimed his second victory under a yellow flag, fighting his way to the front from fifth place as wife Ashey Judd cheered him on.

The Team Ganassi driver was able to hold the lead through most of the opening half of the race and then took victory as the cars ahead of him stopped for fuel.

He was followed over the line by Dan Wheldon from Milton Keynes and Alex Lloyd from Manchester, creating an all-British winners' podium.
