Entries double for art show enjoying a renaissance

A total of 305 pieces are on show at Cottingham Civic Hall in the 61st Haltemprice Art and Craft Exhibition, which last year featured 162.

The exhibition, which is open to all artists living in the East Riding or attending art classes or clubs in the area, runs until Saturday, October 29, and is open daily from 10am to 4pm.

There is a children’s section, featuring entries from pupils at local schools, and prizes that will be awarded for the best entries in a range of categories.

June Mitchell, community arts officer at East Riding Council, said: “The council is really pleased it can continue to put this event on. The standard of work gets higher every year and there are all sorts of different works on show, including a piece by someone who draws with their mouth. It’s a really good exhibition.”

Mrs Mitchell said the event was an ideal outlet for a thriving art scene in the East Riding.

She said: “More and more people are painting nowadays, and that’s probably something to do with more people retiring early and they need somewhere to display and sell their work. We are sure it will go from strength to strength.”
