Epic charity walk begins in Dales today

ONE of the UK's toughest charity treks kicks off in Yorkshire today.

The 100km Trailtrekker walk in the Yorkshire Dales gets underway this morning in Skipton.

Nearly 600 participants from Yorkshire and beyond will be attempting the 62-mile circular course, taking in the stunning heights of Malham Edge and 2,100 ft Penyghent as well as the rolling hills of Langstrothdale and Wharfedale.

Participants will walk throughout that day and following night, having been given up to 30 hours to complete the course. All money raised will go to Oxfam.

James Terry, Oxfam's sponsored events manager, said the event, which starts and finishes at Aireville School in Skipton, was backed by an army of volunteers.

"Covering a distance equivalent to two-and-a-half marathons in under 30 hours, our teams need as much support as we can give," Mr Terry said.

"So whether people in the area have friends or family taking part, or would just like to join in the exciting atmosphere, we would love them to come along to cheer the teams on their way."

Last year's event raised nearly 400,000 for the aid charity, and organisers are hoping the 2010 trek will raise a similar amount.
