Equality body staff slashed

Plans to cut more than 100 jobs at the Equalities and Human Rights Commission have been confirmed, reducing its 257-strong workforce to about 150.

The commission will no longer provide a helpline and operate from fewer offices. Chief executive Mark Hammond said: “The proposals we are outlining today secure the commission’s future at a time of financial pressure.”

Mark Serwotka, general secretary of the Public and Commercial Services union, said: “The government plans to get rid of scores of dedicated staff, experts in their fields, at a time when its spending cuts are making it more likely people will face discrimination and disadvantage.”
