Estate worst for 'sewer abuse'

A HOUSING estate in Sheffield has been named the worst area for "sewer abuse" in Yorkshire, as the number of blockages almost doubled in the last year.

In the first six months of 2010, Yorkshire Water has cleared more than 180 sewer blockages in Shiregreen – compared to an average of just two or three blockages in most residential areas of a similar size. Fran Winter, of Yorkshire Water, said: "We find that often people just don't realise that they shouldn't put things like fat down the sink or baby wipes down the toilet."

The worst offenders for causing blockages are items such as baby wipes and nappies.
