EU alert over children's clothes

One-in-eight items of children's clothing checked in an 18-month survey breached EU safety rules, a new survey showed today.

The main risks came from cords and drawstrings which can get caught in bikes, car doors or playground equipment, warned the European Commission.

Market surveillance authorities in 11 EU countries took part in a joint exercise, checking 16,000 garments between August 2008 and last month.

Nearly 2,200 did not comply with one or more of the requirements of EU safety standards, and more than two-thirds were for babies and very young children.

Its led to EU-wide alerts in which the clothing was removed from shops, while "corrective measures" were taken.
