Evans skips Breakfast as he dashes to see son born

Presenter Chris Evans became a father for the third time yesterday, skipping his Breakfast Show as he made a dash for the birth.

The Radio 2 host was with golfer wife Natasha as 7lb 13oz Eli Alfred Michael Evans was born at 4.52am.

Evans, 46, said it had been a “very emotional morning”.

He had been due to host his programme from Hay-on-Wye but, shortly after arriving on Thursday night, he headed back home when he realised the birth was imminent.

The One Show’s Alex Jones had to step in and host the programme from the town’s literary festival, announcing the winners of the station’s 500 Words children’s story-writing contest.

Evans already has a son Noah, three, with Natasha, and a daughter, Jade – now in her mid-20s – from an earlier relationship, although he played little part in her upbringing during his wild years.

The couple met when they were partners in a celebrity golf tournament and married in 2007.

Evans phoned in to the show yesterday morning to share his joy with listeners after the 52-minute labour.

And he said the birth was so swift that his wife had been unable to have an epidural as she had requested.

“She said ‘I think it’s happening’ so the nurses came in. It was just a two-push birth, a fast-track delivery – the baby popped out.

“She doesn’t mess about,” he added.

David Walliams, who was a judge for the 500 Words competition, was among those sending congratulatory messages.
