Ex-police officer awaits payout

A former Cleveland Police officer wrongfully sent to prison as a result of a malicious prosecution brought by colleagues will have to wait to find out how much he will receive in damages, a judge said.

Ex-Pc Sultan Alam, 49, said he was “relieved” after court hearings which could see him awarded more than £800,000, and will have to wait a few more weeks after Judge Andrew Keyser QC reserved judgment at Leeds County Court.

Mr Alam was jailed for handling stolen goods in 1996, and served half his 18-month sentence. He was finally cleared by the Court of Appeal in 2007. The court heard how Mr Alam was “stitched up” by fellow officers after tribunal proceedings for complaining of racial discrimination.
