Extra brownie points for chief guide

The head of the girl guides in the UK gets a CBE for services to young people after a career with the organisation spanning more than three decades.

The UK's Chief Guide Liz Burnley, 51, who lives in Womersley, near Doncaster, started as a volunteer leader of guides when she was 18.

She has been lead volunteer of the country's largest organisation for girls and young women since 2006.

Mrs Burnley said: "Receiving this honour is a privilege which compares only with that of leading Girlguiding UK's 80,000 fantastic adult volunteers who encourage half a million girls and young women to challenge themselves, develop their self-confidence and learn skills for success in modern life."

Mrs Burnley also works for Common Purpose, a not-for-profit organisation that brings together people from a wide range of backgrounds to help them become more effective leaders in society and is a non-executive director of the NHS North Yorkshire and York primary care trust.
