Extra help for new market traders

LEEDS Council is to extend a scheme to help people get their businesses off the ground in Kirkgate Market.

The How Bizaar! market stall was launched last July, enabling new traders to occupy a spot in the market rent-free for 12 weeks, after which it is hoped some will stay on as permanent stall holders. The project has smashed its target of helping 29 businesses. Already 44 businesses have been test trading on the stall, and a total of 96 businesses have been engaged with the project, with many on the waiting list for their chance to try out their business idea.

The stallholders receive support and guidance while on the How Bizaar! stall, but some have reported that they need further assistance after their 12 weeks are up to help them progress on to a more permanent market stall.

With this in mind, the council is extending the scheme, creating the Bizaar Quarter within the market.
