Falcons, fly fishing and ferrets feature as region's countryside comes to town

THE country is coming to town as The Yorkshire Game Fair looks brings the sights of rural England to Harewood House – continuing today from 9am to 6pm.

Crowds sharing a passion for the Great Outdoors were out in force for demonstrations, competitions and activities at one of the biggest shows yet.

This year's event, of which the Yorkshire Post is media partner, has grown to include a wealth of new attractions, including falcon racing, Simon Whitehead's Pakefield Ferret Display, and The Taste of Game with James Burton.

Highlights included the Kate Cropper sheepdog display. Children also showed off their dog-handling skills herding geese.

The Vale of York Polo Club went through their paces, also explaining the rules of the game.

Other entertainment included live pipe and drum music, simulated whippet coursing, falconry displays, and angling demonstrations in the central arena.

Around the rest of the show there was the chance to be coached in the use of a shotgun, try out a muzzle-loading firearm, take a cast at fly fishing, or sample a beer.

Other activities included wine and cognac tasting, game sampling and tips on how to cook what you've got for the pot.

The event is making a name for itself as one of the best hunting, shooting and fishing fairs in the country.

An event spokesman said: "The Yorkshire Game Fair looks to bring the excitement of the countryside alive for visitors of all ages.

"With demonstrations, competitions, activities, trade stands, helicopter rides, and a traditional fun fair and more going on throughout both days, there is something of interest for everyone.

"So whether you are a serious sporting countryman or just looking for a great family day out, the Yorkshire Game Fair is sure to deliver."
