Fallen heroine

THE pain being suffered by Captain Lisa Head’s family at this time is impossible to comprehend for those fortunate enough not to have lost a close relative at such a tragically young age.

The bravery of the 29-year-old bomb disposal expert, only the second UK servicewoman to be killed in Afghanistan, was staggering, courageously stepping forward every day to attempt to disarm lethal IEDs with incredible skill.

Despite working under such pressure, Capt Head, from Huddersfield, said it was the best job in the world. Tributes have continued to pour in, most poignantly from her family who said “no-one was more loved”. The purpose for her, and her colleagues, working in such danger must not be lost amidst the poignant tributes. For more than a decade British soldiers have been risking their lives every day in Afghanistan because the Government believe the Taliban will bring terror to the streets of this country unless military intervention prevails.
