Fan’s food hopes go up in smoke

FIREFIGHTERS in South Yorkshire say the Euro 2012 football tournament has brought about its first house fire in the county.

Crews were called out after a football fan became distracted while watching the Republic of Ireland’s match against Croatia.

Firefighters were alerted to the incident on Jedburgh Drive in Wincobank, Sheffield, just before 9pm on Sunday.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “They arrived to find food left in the oven had caught fire, damaging the cooker and causing light smoke damage to the kitchen.

“They used breathing apparatus to put out the fire and then ventilated the kitchen.

“The incident comes just days after South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue reported that kitchen fires rose by 25 per cent during the 2010 World Cup, as people became engrossed in football matches and left food unattended,”
