Farm workers' pay: Union may go to court over axed quango

The Government could face a legal challenge over its decision toabolish a board which sets the wages of over 150,000 agricultural workers.

Ministers announced last week that the Agricultural Wages Board would be scrapped as part of the so-called "bonfire" of quangos.

However, union leaders warned the move would force thousands of workers in rural areas into poverty.

Unite said yesterday it was seeking legal advice over a High Court challenge, arguing that the Government had failed to consider the impact of the changes on the rural community, which it was required to do under equality impact rules.

National officer Ian Waddell said legislation paving the way for the board's abolition would be "rushed through" this week, without consultation.

He warned of "dire consequences" for farm workers and the farming industry.
