Fatal dose doctor 'was reading a medical manual'

Daniel Ubani, 66, from Germany, was working his first shift for an out-of-hours care provider when he injected David Gray with 100mg of the drug - 10 times the recommended daily dose, Mr Gray's family's solicitors have said.

The inquest in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, heard how on the day of Mr Gray's death Dr Ubani was flipping through a manual called the British National Formulary.

Dr Ubani's driver Lesley Dent said the doctor was looking at the manual, which is a guide to prescribing, dispensing and administering medicines, when he was between call-outs.

A spokesman for Anthony Collins Solicitors, which is representing the family, said that Mr Gray died after receiving the fatal dose at his home in Manea, Cambridgeshire, on February 16, 2008.

Mr Gray's partner Lynda Bubb told the inquest she called the GP out-of-hours service when Mr Gray complained of severe pain as a result of his kidney stones.

Almost four hours later Dr Ubani attended their home.
