Fence to keep sheep off Kinder Scout

A consultation has been launched over the five-year scheme, which has been designed to keep sheep off Kinder Scout, while still allowing access for walkers and other visitors. The project will start in 2011 and will see areas of the bare and degraded peat landscape restored.

The National Trust, which owns the land, said the fence will be required to allow the newly planted vegetation to get established.

Mike Innerdale, general manager for the National Trust in the Peak District, said: "We want people to get involved and tell us what their favourite routes are on Kinder Scout so that we can take these into account when we're planning the access points for walkers in the line of the fence."

Two consultation meetings will take place to explore the options and where access points should be.

The meetings will be held on December 15 between 6pm and 9pm at Edale Village Hall, and January 6, between 6pm and 9pm at the Royal Hotel, Hayfield.
