Festival provides taste of the past alongside new flavours

HOME-made jam, chutney and marmalade from recipes that date back generations will be presented alongside the best in modern cuisine in Hull’s Yum! Festival of Food and Drink next month.

Chefs from dining establishments the Two Rivers Restaurant, at The Deep, and the Wilson, at Hull Marina, will be joined by Vanessa Powell, whose jams and chutneys were devised by her grandmother’s grandmother.

The festival, organised by the city’s Business Improvement District (BID), will take place on July 29 and 30, most events housed in a “tasty tent” on Princes Dock Street.

Young chefs from the area’s top hotels and restaurants will compete for the Copper Saucepan Award and local producers will sell their wares at a market under canvas.

Ms Powell, who runs VKP Preserves from her home in Hull with her mother Trudy Melton, said: “I was looking for something up in the attic and found scrapbooks full of my nan’s writing. There were recipes for things like peach chutney, rum and raisin marmalade and fig jam – with a recommendation to try that one with fish.”

BID manager Kathryn Shillito said: “The event is all about promoting the excellent food and drink that Hull has to offer and demonstrating the variety.”
