Fewer young people staying in education

There has been a fall in the proportion of young people continuing in education, research suggests.

It reveals a seven percent drop in the number of 17 to 24-year-olds who are taking part in all types of learning, ranging from full-time study to evening classes.

Around one in five adults (19 per cent) is involved in some type of learning, according to the report, published by the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE), while 38 per cent say they have taken part in some form of education in the past three years.

But young people who are becoming less likely to continue studying in some form. The report, published to mark Adult Learners’ Week, is based on a survey of 5,253 adults.

The findings show that 70 per cent of people aged 17 to 24 are involved in some form of learning, down from 77 per cent last year.
