Films shed topical light on life in Gaza Strip

YORK'S City Screen is showing three films – including one funded by the World Health Organisation – about life in Gaza organised in support of Medical Aid for Palestinians.

Marketing manager Dave Taylor said: "Picturehouse Cinemas has a track record of screening documentary films which depict social injustice.

"I'm pleased that City Screen has been able to work with Medical Aid for Palestinians to reveal in film what is happening on a day-to-day basis in Gaza."

The recent attack and killing of those on board an aid ship bound for Gaza has brought this vital issue to the fore, making the event on Sunday June 20 at 5.30pm a must for anyone wanting to know more about everyday life in Gaza, he added.

Titles include Fatenah, the first Palestinian animated short feature. The leading character is a young woman living in the Gaza Strip trying to maintain a normal life under abnormal conditions.

The film is based on the real-life story of a woman whose health compels her to embark on a journey of torment and loss to try to save her simple aspirations.

Fatenah explores the many obstacles and struggles standing between families in Gaza and access to the most essential of health services. Funded by the World Health Organisation, the film has already won several international awards.
