Final payouts expected over North Sea crash

The remaining compensation claims for the relatives of passengers killed when a Super Puma helicopter crashed in the North Sea two years ago are expected to be settled by Christmas.

The 14 passengers and two crew were returning from BP’s Miller platform when the helicopter crashed into the sea, 11 miles north-east of Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, on April 1, 2009. All 16 people on board died.

A total of 10 claims by the relatives of the 14 passengers have been settled by Clyde & Co, the legal firm representing the insurers for helicopter operators Bond Offshore.

It is understood that four claims are still outstanding. All of the claims have been settled without the need of court action, with around £15m reportedly paid out so far.
