Fine arts student creates garden tribute to the mother she misses

A LEEDS art student has created a tribute to her mother, whom she has not seen for 540 days, by building her a special garden at The Light in Leeds.

Mongolian-born Tsendpurev Tsegmid, who is known as Cindy, moved to Leeds five years ago to study a for a master's degree in contemporary fine art practice at Leeds Metropolitan University – a discipline not taught in her native country.

After finishing her initial studies, she decided to study for a PhD.

However, being so far from home has meant that Cindy does not get many opportunities to see her family, who live in a modest house in Ulan Bator, the capital of Mongolia.

There, few houses have gardens and many remain without mains water supplies.

The country's climate of long winters and short hot summers can be so harsh that green-houses or temperature-controlled indoor gardens are the only options for those who can afford them.

Cindy said "Not being able to see my mother as often as I want has created a big hole in my heart. My mama's name is Bayarsanaa Sodnom and her lifelong dream is to have a nice garden."

Her work can be seen inside a former shop unit in The Light, on The Headrow in Leeds, until next Thursday.
