Fire crews deal with several flooding calls around York last night as heavy rain hits the region

Fire crews were called to three separate reports of flooding within 15 minutes in York last night as storms hit various parts of Yorkshire.

York was particularly badly affected with three calls being made to North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue on Friday evening.

The first was at the Monks Cross shopping centre just after 6.20pm to reports a ceiling had collapsed at one of the commercial units due to rain coming through the roof and water was seeping in and affecting the electrics.

A brigade spokesperson said it was believed to have been caused by overflowing gutters and crews isolated the electrics and assisted staff with salvaging property.

At 6.20pm they were then alerted to water coming through the ceiling of a commercial property at Windmill Lane. Again they found water had affected the electrics which had to be isolated and crews advised that the building power should be shut down and the building evacuated and closed due to the extent of flooding.

Flooding also set off fire alarms at a shop on High Petergate in the city. Crews attended but confirmed there was no fire.
