Firefighters in the long haul for Haiti

Firefighters dug deep to help the people of Haiti by pulling a 14-ton fire engine through the centre of Beverley on Saturday to raise money for the earthquake-hit country.

Members of the town’s fire station took it in turns to drag the appliance on two arduous 45-minute journeys as colleagues and supporters carried buckets to collect cash from shoppers and residents.

Organisers said they had raised at least 2,000, which will be given to the United Nations body Unicef as part of its earthquake appeal.

Firefighter Dan Hind, 27, said: “Lincolnshire firefighters went out there but we don’t have that facility in Humberside and we wanted to do something to help.

“Every one of us would have been out there on our hands and knees in the rubble if we could, but apart from that this was the best we could do.

“You look at Haiti and think about the infrastructure and emergency services they’ve got and want to help.”
