Firefighters rescue owl stuck in a tree

It's normally cats who find themselves stuck up a tree - but on Sunday an owl had to be rescued by firefighters.

Fire crews were called to a stretch of the A64 near Askham Bryan, just outside York, after the tame snowy owl flew away from a falconry display.

The bird's jess straps had become tangled in the branches of a tree and it was unable to free itself.

An aerial ladder platform was sent to the scene and used to lift the owl's handler to the branch and rescue it.
