Five people have been taken to hospital after a serious crash near Malton.

They include a woman in her eighties who was air lifted to James Cook Hospital and is in a critical condition.

The Renault Megane she was travelling in crashed with a Vauxhall Corsa on the A169 at Low Marishes shortly before 11.30am.

Police closed the road between High Marishes and the A64 while emergency services were at the scene. It has now fully re-opened.

The driver of the Corsa, a woman in her twenties, suffered shock and was taken to York District Hospital to be checked over. The passenger, a man in his twenties, was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

A man in his forties, who was driving the Megane, did not sustain injuries but was taken to Scarborough Hospital to be checked over.

The woman who air lifted to hospital was a rear seat passenger.

Another passenger, a woman also in her eighties, was taken to Scarborough hospital with serious. These were not believed to be life threatening.

At the time of the collision, the Corsa was travelling North and the Megane was travelling South.

Officers are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision, or who saw either vehicle prior to the collision, to get in touch.
