Flamboyant folk to light up event

The fascinating history of the people of Warley will come to life in an exhibition at the weekend.

Warley, near Halifax, has had more than its fair share of notable and flamboyant characters over the centuries.

Some such as the Farrars emigrated and became founding fathers of the USA. Some like Henry Charles McCrea became central to the dramatic growth of Halifax in the industrial revolution. Others became distinguished in academic circles, the world of entertainment or public service. Warley was home to the eminent sixteenth century mathematician Henry Briggs, and in later years to the entertainer Wilfred Pickles.

The exhibition will be showing pictures, not only of the more famous characters, but also of ordinary residents.

The chairman of Warley ‘s History Association David McCallam said: “We have managed to put together what we believe is a truly fascinating insight into this area’s history through the many interesting characters who have lived here and I urge people to come and take a look.” The exhibition will take place in Warley Town School on Saturday and Sunday and will be open each day from noon until 2.30pm.
