Floods appeal helps more than a million

UK donations to an appeal to aid those affected by last year's flooding in Pakistan have been helped more than a million people through the Disasters Emergency Committee's charity fund.

The DEC said 1,200,000 victims were helped from a 69m pot set up in the aftermath last summer's floods.

The committee urged people to continue giving to the appeal before it closes next week.

DEC chief executive Brendan Gormley said: "All disasters are a tragedy for those caught up in them, but the Pakistan floods are exceptional because of the vast number of people affected."

About 20 million people were affected with 12 million seeing their homes damaged or completely destroyed. Aid provided so far has included clean drinking water for 380,000 people and healthcare for 340,000.
