Floods project brings road warning

DELAYS are feared from today on one of Richmond’s main arteries, as a major six-week flood reduction scheme is set to begin.

The £100,000 project by Yorkshire Water includes installing a new waste water storage pipe in Darlington Road near the junction of Cross Lanes.

The work is anticipated to last six weeks, with contractors on site between 7.30am and 5.30pm Monday to Saturday and temporary two-way traffic lights in operation.

Yorkshire Water says it has been timed to coincide with the school holidays and cause as little disruption as possible.

Dani Munton of Yorkshire Water’s community engagement team, said: “This work is being carried out to improve our sewerage system in the area and ensure it’s better placed to meet the growing demands it comes under, particularly during periods of exceptionally heavy rainfall.

“More intense storms due to climate change, increased housing development and the paving over of green spaces are all increasing the amount of surface water entering the sewer network.”
