‘Flying banana’ centre stage at Warhol-inspired show

Entitled The Times They Were a Changin’: Inspired by Warhol, the exhibition features highlights such as a yellow bubble car known by its owner as “the flying banana”, an action man in lunar clothing, and a sequined dress of Campbell’s Soup cans in direct homage to Warhol’s paintings.

There is also a look at the city’s own cultural heritage with a specially commissioned film featuring Hull’s music scene in the 1960s and 70s.

The items were selected and created by heritage volunteers and the gallery’s Future Ferens members.

Nicola Lawson, of Future Ferens, said: “It’s been a great experience working on this project and it’s amazing to see the history of where you live. I felt a connection to the time even though I wasn’t alive then - the culture that emerged for young people then is still exciting today.”

Volunteer Alan Palmer added: “The whole process has been a blast from start to finish and being involved in the exhibition was an incredible roller coaster journey.”

Artist Rooms, featuring 80 of Warhol’s iconic images, will be on display from June 2.
