‘Flying bishop’ starts in autumn

A SENIOR member of the clergy has been appointed as a “flying bishop” to allay concerns from the Church of England’s conservative fraternity over the ordination of women as priests.

The Reverend Canon Glyn Webster will become the Bishop of Beverley when the Right Reverend Martyn Jarrett retires on September 30.

The Bishop of Beverley Designate has been York Minster’s Canon Chancellor since 2003, and is currently the Acting Dean after Keith Jones retired in April. As a “flying bishop”, he will provide pastoral care and advice to traditional clergy opposed to the ordination of women as priests.
