Focus falls on music idols at new exhibition in city

idols from the music world are the focus of a new exhibition in Sheffield which is being launched today at the gallery of city painter Pete McKee.

McKee opened his A Month of Sundays gallery in Sharrow Vale Road last year and has been looking for other artists to show their work at the venue since.

The first to take up the invitation was music photographer Andy Willsher.

A galaxy of stars, including Sheffield singer Richard Hawley and Arctic Monkeys frontman Alex Turner are included in the show, along with other international recording names.

Mr Willsher, who has been photographing pop and rock acts for a living since the early 1990s , sees many of his pictures published in magazines like NME and Uncut and said his favourite subjects over the years had been Detroit duo the White Stripes, who recently split up.

He added: “About half of my work is for the magazines and I get other commissions from the record companies or from bands who are trying to get a deal or make their mark on the music world.

“It is great job, because you do get to meet your idols. But you also get to help new bands coming through to build their profile, and I am always happy to do that.”

Mr Willsher’s exhibition runs at the gallery until March 11.
