Focus on sport in market hall to celebrate hosting Olympics

WORKS by amateur photographers which celebrate sport have been unveiled at a grade-II listed market hall.

The 50 images have been printed on eight panels suspended from the roof space in Huddersfield’s Queensgate Market.

A competition encouraged people to take photos on a sporting theme to mark the London 2012 Olympics.

The images are on display until November and show sports including rugby, football, netball, athletics, bowling, cycling and swimming.

Steve Horsfall, from Dewsbury, has five images in the exhibition, including football from Newsome High School, Huddersfield, and rugby at Dewsbury Rams.

He said: “I am surprised and thrilled that my images have been selected and I have tried to show the passion that sport is played with at all levels in Kirklees. Whether at schoolboy, amateur or professional level, the competitive tradition between local teams is hopefully captured in my photographs.”

Benn Kafanke, owner of Blacklight Gallery in Byram Arcade, Huddersfield, took a photo of the Galpharm Stadium.

Also on show is an image from Heckmondwike Grammar School, submitted by local business Playrite, who manufacture synthetic sports surfaces.
