Follow in footsteps of an old master

Sightseers can follow in the footsteps of the old master JMW Turner when his journey to the Dales is retraced at an event organised by a preserved railway.

Turner first visited Yorkshire in 1797 and returned here throughout his life, inspired by the spirituality he found in its glorious landscapes.

He visited more than 70 places, sketching and painting the views from so many angles. Many scenes in his Yorkshire works can still be viewed today.

An excursion tomorrow will recreate the artist's visit to Wensleydale and Swaledale during a sketching tour nearly 200 years ago.

Ruth Annison, who has organised the event for Wensleydale Railway, said: "Turner stayed in a number of local inns, travelling on horseback from place to place. We shall leave Leeming Bar station on the 9.25am train for the one hour journey to Redmire. A coach will take the group onwards from Redmire to visit abbey, castle, waterfall and other sites associated with Turner's visit.

"Lunch will be at the historic Kings Head Hotel in Richmond, where Turner himself is believed to have stayed overnight in late July 1816."
