Food market is highlighted in fight against supermarket

A SHOWCASE of local produce will be staged next month as campaigners vow to step up their fight against contentious plans for a supermarket in a North Yorkshire market town.

Broadcaster Selina Scott has been one of the leading opponents against the proposals for the superstore in Malton.

She will be at the inaugural Food Lovers’ Market in the town on November 5, which will involve more than 30 stalls featuring produce from leading food and drink specialists.

Ms Scott, who lives near Malton, said: “I think this new market is another way to experience the fantastic independent quality food producers and retailers that Malton and the surrounding area has to offer its visitors.

“This is part of our precious heritage and any major supermarket development that would infringe on this way of life must be prevented.”

Councillors voted last year to sell the town’s Wentworth Street car park, after seven companies expressed an interest in developing the site.

A planning application was submitted by developers from GMI Holbeck Land to Ryedale District Council in September.

The market will be the sister event to Malton’s Food Lovers Festival, which launched in 2009 and attracted more than 10,000 visitors this year. It will be held on November 5 from 9am to 2pm.
