Food trade sets out its stall as steel city digs in for festival

FARMERS, restaurant owners and bakers were all putting the finishing touches to their stalls and recipes today in preparation for the launch of Sheffield’s Food Festival.

The event, which runs from tomorrow until July 10 aims to showcase the variety of food and drink on offer in the city, both homegrown and more exotic.

Lian Noriega-Waite, the farm supervisor at Sheffield’s Manor Lodge Discovery Centre, will be sharing her skills during the festival, and showing people how to grow their own fruit and vegetables.

The centre, which is run by community enterprise Green Space, encourages urban gardening and the team will help plant “edible window boxes” including lettuce, herbs and tomatoes for people who don’t have a garden.

Mick Ireland, a butcher at Moss Valley Fine Meats in Norton will also open the doors to his shop on two days during the event, firstly to teach visitors butchery skills and second for a sausage making masterclass.

Other demonstrations will also take place during the seven-day festival at various locations in the city centre, including a marquee at the top of Sheffield’s Fargate, which will host cookery classes and a WI “village show”.
