Footballer’s medal sells for £1,800

A STAR-shaped medal awarded to a former Sheffield footballer and politician has been sold at auction for £1,800.

The medal, awarded to William Clegg when his Sheffield Wednesday side won the Sheffield Association Cup in May 1877, had a pre-sale estimate of between £1,500 and £2,000.

It was sold by Bonhams auctioneers at a sale in Chester on Wednesday.

A spokesman confirmed that the piece had been sold to a “private Sheffield-based buyer”.

Clegg, born in Sheffield in 1852, played for Sheffield Wednesday alongside his brother Charles and the pair were the first brothers to both be capped for England.

After retiring from football, William Clegg became leader of the Liberal group on Sheffield City Council and, later, Lord Mayor of Sheffield.
