Footpath crossing to close after fears over rail safety

RAIL bosses are removing the footpath level crossing at a station which links two platforms after reports of near misses between pedestrians and trains.

Network Rail confirmed yesterday it had received a number of complaints about the issue at South Milford station and said the changes were being made because of fears an accident may happen along the busy stretch of the 90mph line unless action was taken to address the problem.

The Route Managing Director of Network Rail, Phil Verster, said: “We regularly receive reports of pedestrians crossing from the car park to the Leeds platform when the warning lights are on red and so putting themselves in danger from trains travelling on the other line to Selby.

“This is a 90mph line and we cannot wait for an accident before taking action.”

The changes will be in place from later this month.

“From Monday, September 29, the only access between platforms will be along ramps at the end of the platforms and through the existing subway,” Mr Verster added.

Network Rail said signs and fencing will be updated to make the new access arrangements clear for all users.

It added that further improvements to the pathway and lighting will be completed as soon as possible.
