Abraham Wilkinson and Anthony Mitchell, both of Sowerby, were the last men to be executed on the infamous Halifax Gibbet. Of the 63 criminals executed on the Gibbet, seven were recorded as coming from Sowerby.

The Salt Warehouse and No. 4 Warehouse, both part of the recent restoration project at Sowerby Bridge Wharf, were built with a canal arm leading inside, forming an interior dock which meant that goods could be loaded and unloaded under cover.

The present St Bartholomew’s Church in Ripponden is actually the fourth 
church on the same site. The second 
was washed away by a flood that 
was so severe villagers found a coffin up a tree.
