It was triggered when members of the public reported intruders at the shop in Cawood High Street, just after 12.30am today.

The suspects fled before local police arrived – but officers identified a vehicle with suspected links to the break-in on the B1222 a few minutes later.

The vehicle failed to stop and a stinger was deployed.

Four men ran from the vehicle but were arrested following a foot pursuit, with officers being helped by the police helicopter.

The men, all from West Yorkshire, were arrested on suspicion of burglary and are currently being held in custody while investigations continue. Three are in their 20s and one is in his 30s.

Detective Inspector Wayne Fox said: “This was a great example of different policing teams working together to achieve a common goal.

“The police response was assisted greatly by vigilant members of the public, who raised the alarm in the first instance.
