Fox caught on camera after twins attack

This mobile phone picture shows a fox suspected of mauling twin sisters as they slept.

It was taken by one of the first police officers to arrive at the scene of the attack in Hackney, east London.

As paramedics tended to gravely-injured nine-month-olds Lola and Isabella Koupparis, the officer walked around their home.

He discovered the animal standing outside the rear patio doors of the 800,000 three-storey Stoke Newington property. The blurry image shows the apparently young fox alert and staring at the officer through the glass of the sliding door.

It is understood the encounter lasted just seconds because the fox then ran off into the back garden, which is filled with toys.

The patio doors had been left open during the hot weather, but were closed immediately after the attack.

Police said it is not known if the fox was the same animal as one caught in a trap and put down the next day.

There is also no further evidence that the fox is the one responsible for the bloody attack.

Neighbours of the Koupparises have said numerous feral foxes are regularly seen in the street and gardens.

They have pointed out dens used by the animals and evidence of bins being overturned, and one confessed to feeding the animals.

Lola and Isabella remained in separate hospitals yesterday after undergoing treatment for their injuries.

Relatives said Lola was "a lot better" but Isabella remains under sedation following surgery.

Lola suffered facial injuries and puncture marks to her arm, while Isabella suffered arm injuries after a fox entered their bedroom.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman confirmed that police saw a fox at the property when they attended at 10pm on Saturday.

An animal expert said the fox which attacked the twins may have seen them as potential rivals for food.
