Fox supported over carriers

Liberal Democrat Cabinet Ministers Vince Cable and Michael Moore have thrown their weight behind Defence Secretary Liam Fox in his battle to save the Royal Navy's two planned new aircraft carriers.

Scottish Lib Dems Leader Tavish Scott said both the Business Secretary and the Scottish Secretary had warned of the loss of jobs and skills if either of the carriers is cancelled.

Vince Cable said that these carriers matter to the UK and they matter to Scotland, Mr Scott said after the leaders of the four main political parties in Scotland met Defence Secretary Liam Fox in London to warn him of the effect of defence cuts.

There are fears that thousands of jobs at shipyards in Fife and on the Clyde would be lost if the carrier programme was downgraded, while thousands more would be affected by significant military base closures.
