Free parking boost for festive shoppers

Shoppers visiting Leeds will be able to park free in some council car parks over Christmas and the New Year.

Parking at a "ring" of car parks just outside the city centre will be free on specific dates during the holiday season.

Parking will be free on Saturday, December 18 and Saturday, January 8 at Woodhouse Lane, Quarry Hill, Meadow Lane/Hunslet Lane, Maude Street and West Street.

And there will be free parking throughout the city on December 25 to 28 and January 1 to 3, although this does not include the staffed car parks at Woodhouse Lane and Queens Hall.

All council-run car parks in Otley will be free on Saturday, December 18.

Councillor Tom Murray, the city's council's executive board member for environmental services, said: "Times have been hard for local businesses recently and we want to make sure that everyone – shoppers and traders alike – has reason to be cheerful this Christmas.

"By making these car parks free on some of the busiest shopping days of the year we're hoping the local economy will receive a very welcome boost."
